Finished (probably, possibly, maybe,...)
I probably can't leave well enough alone, but I think we're probably done with the new site. We've completed the import of all of the old blog posts (back to 2005), and I've recreated the travelblog with pictures and tags.
Yes, I know it looks different from this regular blog, but I couldn't use the same application for two areas of the site (dumb, I know, but I just couldn't implement it the way I wanted to, besides, they're different blogs, so why can't they look different?) I also can't put an archive on the travelblog, but I don't think that's very important because they're broken out by trip on the left side anyway. The tags use a different application, too (and don't display exactly as I'd like when you click on something), but they have to because the regular blog's are integrated. Not much I can do about it at this point. It's the best app I could find for the purpose
So for the time-being, I think I'm happy with the site. I'm sure there will be things I'll always want to tinker with, especially because I've said we're done a couple of times before.
Maybe we'll actually start writing on the travelblog again (we also should start travelling again, but hey). Jess has plans to add some pictures to the California trip, too.
So enjoy.
Until I find something else I want to improve.
re-publishing
I'm working on re-publishing [most] old posts; you won't notice unless you're using the feed.
[Update 13 Nov: FINISHED! and Brendan re-did the old travelblog.]
clearly
Mission Accomplished!
The site has been redesigned, the gallery is working, the blog posts have been imported, the old xml feed for the blog has been forwarded, and updating has begun on all of the old posts. It may take a while before the entire archive is updated, but we'll get there. The new format allows us to host the blog on our own site, rather than relying on blogger for the posts and bloglines for the comments. We won't be able to import all of the old comments, but it's not that big of a loss in the grand scheme of things.
The travelblog will also be added at some point in the future. We've got all the old posts, but don't really feel like updating them all right now. Maybe sometime soon.
So take a look around and tell me what you think. Be sure to check out the flashy stuff on the blog page (the Reads link and the Subscribe rollover) that Jess just HAD to have.
The dust has mostly settled, but if you see something that's not right, let me know.
EDIT: OK, so the Reads slide-in was working last night before I went to bed. It looks great in Firefox, but not so much in IE. I'm working on it.
Oh, and I'm also working on the timestamp for the new blog posts.
major changes
Because Brendan got an email from our hosting service that our gallery was unexpectedly using a whole lot of resources, we Brendan decided to overhaul the whole site. I still have to finish re-publishing some old blog posts that were moved from blogger, but mostly things are pretty well set around here.
So a big round of applause for Bren in getting it all figured out and up so quickly.
