So we got a bill from the hospital and the NICU the other day. What a bunch of crap. The hospital one I don't quite understand at this point, but apparently they billed the insurance wrong the first time so we're supposed to ignore it anyway; it's the NICU bill that has me all angry. Evidently they don't participate in our insurance. First of all, what kind of sense does that make? The hospital participates, the neonatal doctors should, too. Second, it's not like we had a choice. We can't refuse their services. Umm, excuse me doctor? Yeah, do me a favor, don't resuscitate my baby. Whatever. And it's not as though we have some weird insurance carrier -- it's Carefirst, Blue Cross Blue Shield. It's only the largest provider in the area, and the hospital is only the flagship hospital in northern Virginia. I just feel like it's a sneaky way to get money. It's not a trivial amount, either. We're talking $1,800, of which our insurance will pay $57 since it was out of network. Total garbage.
